THE HAMLET

A UNIQUE AND CHARMING PLACE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

Come and have a marvelous stay at Cuevas Al Jatib and enjoy a trip into the depths of history.

Our caves are ideal if you wish to get away from civilization and experience a quiet secret place to rest and let all your concerns vanish. Up until 40 years ago you could find quite a number of people living in small troglodyte hamlets in this wild, beautiful and forgotten part of the Granada province. The hamlets were carved into the rock on the edge of the canyons formed by the waters of a lake that existed here in ancient times.

Originally caves were basic and unpretentious dwellings carved by their occupants. The main front room with an entrance door would be the living and dining room with an open fire. Next to the façade there was also a kitchen and a room for the animals with an extra door. The sleeping rooms were inside the rock and usually had no natural light. A good cave would have a ventilation system with horizontal and vertical funnels. As people thought that living in a cave was poor, they started adding brick walls to their façades to make them look like a house or they moved into town into a “proper” building. Therefore many caves and hamlets were abandoned between the fifties and the seventies of the last century.

Our Cuevas Al Jatib are situated in such a hamlet. It`s dwellings have been remodeled and play host today to lovely holiday accommodation for you, your family and friends. It offers you modern amenities in a traditional and authentic site. We will ensure that you have a heartfelt welcome and look after you during your stay.

There is a restaurant in our complex and there are also many restaurants that offer great culinary variety and good quality local food in the area. In our hamlet you will find a Hammam bath (Arabic immersion bath) with a warm water pool and steam (caldarium) and a cold water pool (frigidarium). The contrast stimulates your blood circulation, your vital organs become stronger and you will experience a state of complete relaxation. This is the perfect preparation for one of our massages or other wellness treatments.

Troglotherapy” in Cuevas Al Jatib will wake your senses that are often overridden by daily routines and responsibilities. The softness of the waters, the sensuality of the caves’ shapes, the oriental fragrances, the smoothness of the massages and warm mint tea with leaves from our garden… will add to the enchantment you will experience.

During the hot summer months you can swim in our outdoor pool, just step in to refresh yourself, sunbathe or sit in the shade and enjoy the view of the surrounding semi-arid landscape and mountains. When the light fades and the sun sets we recommend spending a cheerful evening on our terrace tasting local or national wines with some tapas.

Cuevas Al Jatib are situated in the Altiplano de Granada, a territory with a great variety of landscapes and cultural heritage. You can complete your stay with excursions to charming villages such as Orce (Route of the first European settlers & Museum), Castril (Castril river: origin and passageway) or Galera (Castellón Alto & Tútugi archaeological sites), visiting lakes (Negratín, La Bolera, San Clemente or Portillo), archaeological sites (Cerro Cepero Baza), Natural parks with beautiful vegetation (Sierra de Baza, Sierra de Castril, Sierra de Cazorla…) or badlands in Castilléjar. There are countless possible activities for young and old.

Cuevas Al Jatib are about 100km away from the capital Granada where you can visit the Alhambra, the Sacromonte, the tomb of the Catholic Kings… and in winter you can participate in all kinds of winter sports in the Sierra Nevada. The closest beach is about 1 hour and 15min away. The unspoiled and protected coast of Cabo de Gata is about 2 hours’ drive.
